POSTAL RECRUITMENT & TRAINING CENTRE - LAHORE

BRIEF HISTORY

After creation of training centre in 1954, it was designated as "Sub Regional Postal Training Centre". In the beginning, Assistant Superintendent of Post Offices held the charge of the centre as "Officer in Charge' In December, 1962 the post was re-designated as "Principal".

This training centre was accommodated in one room only in G.P.O. premises. Additional accommodation was later on provided to increase the number of classes and for setting up a "Dummy Post Office" & "Dummy Sorting Office".

In 1990 the centre was shifted in the building purchased by the department at 22-Al-Mumtaz Street, Habib-ullah Road. Garhi Shahu, Lahore. The centre remained there in up to August 2002. There-after it was shifted at Lahore G.P.O. compound on the 2nd Floor of newly constructed building. This centre is presently functioning under the administrative control of Directorate General, Pakistan Post and is headed by a  Principal, who is a BPS-18 officer of Postal Group. 

HOSTEL FACILITIES

The training facilities were only available for the officials working in the Local units at Lahore as no hostel was available. In 1956, a small room with the capacity of the ten trainees was provided and subsequently the Hostel capacity was expanded the cater for about forty trainees. As a result of this expansion, the training centre was after seats to officials working in offices out side Lahore also.

Now, the Hostel for the trainees is situated at Multan Road, Lahore which is 4 Kilo meter away from the centre. This department building provides the sufficient accommodation for the residents/out siders trainees.

Four Attendants, Three Security Guards, & One Sanitary worker are attached with Hostel. The Hostel has also been provided the latest necessary facilities i.e. Water Cooler & Refrigerator. A Recreation Room with a Television-Set and facilities for indoor games are also available.

TRAINING CAPACITY

In 1954, only two classes were arranged, but when additional accommodation provided, the capacity increased to the present level of six classes at a time up to February 1972. The number of trainees per class was twenty five, but since the March of same year, the number was reduced to twelve.

HOUR OF ATTENDENCE

Classes are held for six days from Monday to Saturday. Sunday is a weekly holiday.

METHODS OF TRAINING

Until December, 1978, the "Lecture System" as in general use in educational institutions was applied. The instructors were required to take turns with each class to teach subjects allocated to them. With effect from 07.12.1978, One Instructor- One Class system has been introduced. Under this method one Instructor teaches all the subjects to one particular class. He takes in hand one subject at a time, the next subject being taken up after the first one is done with. All the Instructors incharge of the various classes are provided relief, whenever needed, by the remaining members of the tutorial staff i.e. Principal, Vice-Principal, Training Officer & Demonstrator, The over all supervision of all the classes is, however, the responsibility of the Principal in assistance with the Vice Principal and the Training Officer.

PRACTICAL TRAINING

Trainees are supplied folder containing blank forms (in original) on all the subjects methods of filling up or dealing with there forms are discussed during the theoretical training in the class rooms and trainees are required to perform practical work in a 11 "Dummy Post Office".
Similarly, the Mail Sorting & Transportation stages are given extensive practice in sorting relating to such offices and zones.

EXAMINATI0NS

Examinations of S.B. Specialized and Typing & Correspondence Courses are held at the end of the training period. Whereas the examinations of all other classes are held on the semester system basis. Result is declared on the last day of the session.

In case of failure of any trainee, the said official is detained for the period of seven days and attends another examination. The minimum Pass Marks range from 40 to 50% of the aggregate marks in all papers.

LIBRARY

In 1955, only 87 books were available in the library, now the library contains 2500 Non-departmental books and 1600 departmental books. The collection of books is Comprises with English & Urdu Literature, History & General knowledge, Religious and the books relating to Pakistan Affairs. A Diploma Holder Librarian is the incharge of Library, who arranges & issues the books to desired trainees.
